Care for Widows and Pastors in Need

Care for Widows and Pastors in Need

Every month, at least one PCA pastor or their family experiences tragedy. It can be the death of a spouse, an unexpected medical issue, or an everyday activity that becomes a life-changing event.

The ministry leaders who serve our churches are often financially unprepared for these challenging moments. For over 50 years, the Relief Fund has provided temporary financial assistance needed to help ministers and their families overcome unexpected obstacles.

At the Relief Fund, we are invited into some of the hardest moments in the lives of our denominational family. Whether it’s a life-changing injury, the unexpected loss of a spouse, or hardship that comes when retirement savings is not enough, the Relief Fund is often the last resort for those in need. In five years, the number of pastors nearing retirement and widows in need of support is projected to double. Your gifts to the Relief Fund provide a practical way for the church to look after those who have faithfully served our churches.

Geneva Relief Fund and exists to support women like Mary Lu Strawbridge whose husband, Ted, passed away during the prime of his life and ministry. Through Survivor’s Assistance, every widow receives an immediate gift of $1,000 upon the death of her husband, regardless of her financial situation. This gift helps with immediate expenses associated with medical care and funeral arrangements.

Mike Fennema went on a mountain bike ride with his children. In a fluke accident, he flew over his handlebars and suffered a spinal cord injury. After 10 days in the hospital and 91 days in rehabilitation, Mike returned home to a completely different life. The Relief Fund stepped in with financial assistance to help fill the gap between their income and need. All over the country, the Relief Fund is helping ministry families like the Fennemas: the need is great, but the church can meet it.

Having been without a pastoral call since June 2019, Rev. Rick DeMass and his wife began dipping into their PCA retirement fund to make ends meet. In June 2023, Rick’s employer informed him that the business was shutting down and he’d subsequently be without work. A month later, Rick was diagnosed with cancer. By early September, the DeMasses learned that the Relief Fund would be awarding the family a monthly monetary gift to cover almost half of their monthly expenses through 2023. The gift of support has since been extended through 2024.

Looking after those who looked after us

Too many ministry families experience financial need for which they are unprepared, and an increasing number of retired pastors and widows live near the poverty line. Pastors and ministry workers faithfully serve and care for Christ’s church. It’s our turn to serve them.
